Popek Monster

Bellator 245 and Bellator 246 at the “FightSphere” at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn., on Sept. 11 and 12.

September 10, 2020 by admin

Bellator MMA’s “FightSphere” at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn., has hosted action during this ongoing coronavirus pandemic, but not quite like this.

For the first time ever, the “FightSphere” will hold a massive doubleheader, headlined by Phil Davis vs. Lyoto Machida in a rematch at Bellator 245 on Friday, Sept. 11, and Juan Archuleta vs. Patchy Mix for the vacant bantamweight world title at Bellator 246 on Saturday, Sept. 12.

The cards will also have Cat Zingano and Liz Carmouche making their highly anticipated Bellator debuts, as Zingano takes on Gabby Holloway in a featherweight tilt at Bellator 245, while Carmouche faces DeAnna Bennett at flyweight during Bellator 246. Each card will air live on DAZN at 10 p.m. ET. (as well as on Paramount Network in the U.S.).

Davis (21-5-1 no contest) defeated Machida (26-9) by unanimous decision in the latter fighter’s home country of Brazil back when they were in the UFC in August 2013. More than seven years later, Machida will look to avenge that loss in this light heavyweight clash. The 35-year-old Davis enters the bout coming off a third-round TKO (punches) of Karl Albrektsson last October. Machida, 42, dropped a split decision to Gegard Mousasi in September during his last appearance in the cage.

Meanwhile, Archuleta (24-2), who is coming off a decision victory over Henry Corrales in January, will have to hand Mix (13-0) his first loss if he’s going to wrap the bantamweight title around his waist by the night’s end. This fight has the 32-year-old knockout artist dropping down a weight class to make this world title shot happen. Mix, 26, has racked up three straight first-round submissions in Bellator, as he looks to make his fourth performance with the company his best.

Zingano (10-4) vs. Holloway (6-5) will serve as the co-main event to Davis vs. Machida 2 at Bellator 245, while Jon Fitch (32-7-2, 1 NC) vs. Neiman Gracie (9-1) will be the co-main event to Archuleta-Mix at Bellator 246.

Hector Lombard vs Kendall Grove Fight ready for bare knuckle fight Friday in Florida

September 10, 2020 by admin

Kendall Grove had just arrived in Daytona Beach, Fla., and finished a run on Tuesday in preparation for his Friday bout against Hector Lombard.

He was out of breath, but ready to roll for the 46th bout of his professional career, this time in Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship 12.

At 37 with a lifetime record of 25-20, including 1-1 in BKFC bouts, the Baldwin High School graduate knows each time he steps in the cage or ring could be his last.

Lombard, a native of Cuba, is 42 and sports a lifetime record of 34-10-1.

“He’s good, he’s a Bellator undefeated middleweight champ, he’s an Olympic judoka guy, so he’s tough and he’s one of the best in the world,” Grove said. “So, stoked to be fighting him.”

The bout between the two mixed martial arts veterans is the co-main event on Friday’s fight card, which was recently moved up a week. Grove said his training camp has been nine weeks long, with the last six weeks of intensive training, all on Maui at his I & I Academy gym in Wailuku.

Grove credited veteran Valley Isle boxing trainer Donavin Moleta for helping him prepare. Grove is 6-foot-6 and has a reach advantage over the 5-10 Lombard, 79 inches to 71. Both are listed at 185 pounds.

“Working hard, you know, I mean obviously he’s a beast, kind of gotta work hard to even stay afloat with a guy like that,” Grove said. “If I didn’t come in prepared then I’m going to get smashed. We’re going to find out, but I feel I trained hard, I put in the time, I put in the hours on the bag, sparring and whatever I had to do. So, feel good, feel great.”

Grove has been a headliner in the BKFC since its inception in 2018.

“I like it, it’s an opportunity, it gives different avenues for fighters to make a living,” Grove said. “So, yeah, I like it and it’s fun.”

He beat Bruce Abramski by unanimous decision in BKFC 2 and lost the Marcell Stamps in a third-round knockout in BKFC 3.

BKFC 12 Thiago Alves vs Julian Lane

September 10, 2020 by admin

Thiago Alves has a new opponent for his bare-knuckle boxing debut.

The Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship announced Thursday that MMA veteran Phil Baroni is out of the scheduled main event of BKFC 12 on Sept. 11 and stepping in for him to fight Alves is The Ultimate Fighter 16 alumnus Julian Lane.

No reason was given for Baroni’s withdrawal. MMA Fighting has reached out to BKFC officials for further information.

This event marks Alves’ first bare-knuckle boxing fight after spending the last 15 years of his career with the UFC. Alves, 36, compiled a 15-12 record inside the octagon and once challenged for the UFC welterweight title. He is currently 23-15 in pro MMA.

Lane makes his fourth appearance for the BKFC. He is 1-2 in the promotion so far, with a unanimous win over Tom Shoaff sandwiched between knockout losses to UFC veterans Jim Alers and Leonard Garcia.
